New Treatment for Osteoarthritis in Cats - Solensia
There is a new treatment for osteoarthritis in cats called, Solensia.
Osteoarthritis or OA is a type of arthritis that happens when the protective tissue in the joints (cartilage) is worn down, causing bones to rub against one another. You may think OA just makes moving harder, but it can also cause severe pain.
This can happen to cats at any age, not just older cats. OA pain is chronic pain that’s always there. It doesn’t go away and can get worse without the right treatment. Chronic pain is different from acute pain, which is pain that lasts a short time and gets better, like that from a cut, scratch, or pulled muscle. Without treatment, the pain will continue to get worse. This can affect their quality of life and the antics that make your cat, “your cat.”
Since cats can’t take NSAIDS long-term, the option previously was to treat with joint supplements that helped slow cartilage deterioration and helped the condition from getting worse. This was very good for the joint long term, but it didn’t directly address the existing pain the cat was feeling. Is your cat painful?
There is a new option available to our feline patients. Solensia is the FIRST and ONLY FDA-approved treatment to control cat OA pain. It is a once-monthly injection that directly impacts OA pain.
